Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia carries unwanted Champions League record into Aston Villa game

Joan Garcia returns to Barcelona’s Champions League campaign facing a difficult question: can he finally keep a clean sheet in Europe?

The goalkeeper produced his finest performance for the club at the Parc des Princes, making 10 outstanding saves against Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona still lost 4-2, however, a result that captures the contrast in Garcia’s European career with the club so far.

Signed to become the reliable defensive presence capable of restoring the security once associated with Marc-Andre ter Stegen in 2015, Garcia now faces a challenge that is both personal and collective. Barcelona need him to make decisive saves, but they also need to stop conceding so regularly.

According to figures published by Spanish newspaper AS, Garcia has played 12 Champions League matches for Barcelona without recording a clean sheet.

Barcelona’s opponents in the competition this season have included Feyenoord, Galatasaray and Paris Saint-Germain, all of whom have scored against him. Last season, he conceded three goals against Newcastle, two against Atletico de Madrid, and one apiece against Chelsea, Eintracht Frankfurt, Slavia Prague and Copenhagen.

The overall record is 20 goals conceded in 12 matches. Garcia allowed 14 last season and has conceded six at the start of this campaign, an average of 1.66 goals per game.

Those numbers also reflect a wider defensive problem at Barcelona. Since the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 season, the team have failed to keep a clean sheet in 18 successive Champions League matches. That weakness prevented them from progressing further and ended their hopes of reaching finals they had dreamed of playing in Munich and Budapest.

Garcia cannot be held solely responsible for that run. In Paris, he was Barcelona’s outstanding player and his 10 saves prevented an even heavier defeat. The result nevertheless remains a damaging entry on any goalkeeper’s record, particularly because it revived memories of costly moments against Atletico de Madrid last season.

One example came with Julian Alvarez’s free-kick for the opening goal. Although Garcia made an impressive attempt to stop it, analysts believe he could have read the flight better because Alvarez was the only possible taker. They also felt he might have dealt with Alexander Sørloth’s header for the second goal, much as he had handled a header from Ferran Torres in Paris.

Garcia is expected to return to the national-team squad after recovering from the injury he suffered against Racing Santander. Before that, he has a significant European examination when Barcelona face Aston Villa in the Champions League on 03 November 2026.

The consensus was that Garcia represented a successful signing. Expectations have now risen beyond simply being a good goalkeeper: Barcelona want the kind of match-winning saves they believe ter Stegen has been unable to provide since 2015, and which could help return the club to the summit of European football.
