Barcelona explore fresh strategy to sign Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez

Barcelona are continuing to pursue a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with sporting director Deco travelling to Madrid for a private meeting with the Argentina international’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo.

Deco was accompanied by his assistant, Joao Amaral, for discussions intended to clarify the next steps in what Barcelona recognise will be an extremely difficult transfer. The meeting does not indicate that an agreement is close or that a transfer has been completed.

Instead, according to Catalan newspaper Sport, it forms part of a strategy Barcelona have been developing for several months. The club continue to regard Alvarez as one of their highest priorities as they look to strengthen their attacking options.

Alvarez has quickly established himself as one of the leading forwards in La Liga since joining Atletico from Manchester City. The 2022 World Cup winner has become a central figure in Diego Simeone’s plans and is viewed by Atletico as a key part of the club’s sporting project.

That position makes negotiations particularly complicated. Atletico have no intention of giving up a player they consider fundamental to their team, while Barcelona are aware that their interest alone will not persuade the Madrid club to open formal discussions.

Despite those obstacles, Barcelona have chosen not to abandon their pursuit. The latest meeting is intended to maintain communication with Alvarez’s camp and ensure the Catalan club are prepared to act should the circumstances change.

Barcelona want a clearer understanding of the player’s position and the intentions of his representatives. The club believe Alvarez’s possible desire to move to Camp Nou could provide them with an important advantage, but accept that the player’s personal preference would not, by itself, be enough to force through a move.

The discussions are also designed to strengthen the strategic relationship between Barcelona and Hidalgo. Club officials want to remain closely aligned with the forward’s representatives so they can respond quickly to any developments over the coming months.

Their broader objective is to develop a plan that might convince Atletico to reconsider their stance, or allow Barcelona to take advantage of an unexpected opening in the situation. The meeting therefore represents an attempt to preserve the possibility of a deal rather than evidence that negotiations have reached an advanced stage.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Deco understand that the proposed transfer faces significant barriers. Relations between the two clubs are complicated, and Atletico’s determination to retain Alvarez is likely to remain the biggest obstacle.

However, the Barcelona leadership believes closing the door completely would carry too much risk. As long as there remains a potential opportunity, the club intend to proceed carefully and continue exploring whether a major deal for Alvarez can be made possible.
