Barcelona explore Ayoze Perez option as Julian Alvarez deal slips out of reach
Barcelona have begun work on a possible move for Villarreal forward Ayoze Perez after accepting that signing Atletico de Madrid striker Julian Alvarez this summer is not currently realistic.
According to journalist David Sanchez, speaking on Radio Marca, there has been behind-the-scenes movement at Camp Nou as Barcelona’s sporting management switches attention to alternative targets for the centre-forward position.
Atletico de Madrid are firmly opposed to selling Alvarez, regarded by the club as one of their most important players, if not the best in their squad. That stance has forced Barcelona sporting director Deco to focus on more achievable solutions for some time.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has made his requirement clear to the club’s hierarchy. He wants a new recognised number nine to complete his squad and believes the team needs a clinical striker capable of adding a different dimension to its attack and providing a regular source of goals.
That need has become more pressing as Barcelona prepare for a season in which they aim to compete strongly for every major trophy. However, many of their preferred targets are high-profile players whose clubs have little intention of allowing them to leave easily.
With the transfer window approaching its conclusion, the number of realistic options available to Joan Laporta’s administration is diminishing. Perez has now emerged as an unexpected but attractive alternative, with Sanchez reporting that he is highly regarded by Flick.
The Germany manager is familiar with Perez’s qualities and believes the Spain international could adapt quickly to Barcelona’s style. His energy, experience and ability to operate in several attacking positions make him more versatile than a traditional centre-forward, while he can also play as an outright striker when required.
Perez is 32 and has extensive experience at the highest level. He is under contract with Villarreal until 2028, meaning the Yellow Submarine would demand a substantial fee before considering his departure.
His current deal contains a release clause worth about 30m euros. That figure could be negotiated down if Barcelona and Villarreal enter direct talks, according to the report.
Sanchez also says Perez himself would be completely open to the proposed move. Should Barcelona decide to make a formal approach and contact Villarreal, the forward would reportedly do everything possible to fulfil his ambition of joining the Catalan club this summer.
The potential move would represent a significant change of direction for Barcelona. Alvarez remains the dream target, but Atletico’s refusal to consider selling him has left the club looking for a more attainable striker who can meet Flick’s immediate requirements.
Perez’s age, experience and flexibility appear to have made him a particularly appealing option as Barcelona assess how best to strengthen their attack before the transfer window closes.
