Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen ruled out for several weeks with thigh injury

Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen will miss several weeks after suffering a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps.

The club confirmed the Denmark international’s diagnosis on Sunday, following the injury he sustained during Saturday’s match at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Medical tests carried out on Sunday morning showed the extent of the problem.

“Tests have confirmed that first-team player Andreas Christensen has a muscular injury to the rectus femoris of the left quadriceps,” Barcelona said in an official medical update. “He will be unavailable for the coming weeks and his recovery will determine when he is ready to return.”

Christensen started against Sevilla after also being named in the starting line-up for the match against Racing. He provided the assist for Raphinha’s opening goal against the Andalusian side.

However, the 30-year-old was unable to finish the game. He was injured in the 58th minute during a challenge with Rubi Yor and quickly called for medical assistance after realising he had a serious problem with his left leg.

Christensen left the field and was later seen in tears on the bench at the Sanchez-Pizjuan, frustrated by another injury setback that has interrupted his progress and affected his ability to maintain his form.

The latest problem is another blow to the defender’s time at Barcelona, where a succession of injuries has limited his contribution both on the pitch and away from it. He renewed his contract with the club in July, extending his stay until 2028.

Christensen missed 32 matches for Barcelona and Denmark during the 2025-26 season because of a cruciate ligament tear. He was also absent for three further games because of pain in his leg muscles.

The previous campaign, 2024-25, was similarly disrupted. He did not play in 37 matches because of an Achilles tendon problem and missed another 16 games with muscular pain.

His latest injury means Christensen will now be unavailable to Hans Flick’s Barcelona for several weeks, with the timing of his return dependent on how he responds to treatment and rehabilitation.
