Barcelona could use Jules Kounde sale to fund summer rebuild
Barcelona may accept a major offer for Jules Kounde as they attempt to raise funds and reduce their wage bill before the end of the summer transfer window.
The club are working on an ambitious reshaping of the squad under sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick, with Rodri, Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo among their priorities. To make those plans possible, Barcelona also need to sanction departures and create room within their salary limit.
According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Kounde has emerged as a possible sale if a sufficiently attractive proposal arrives. Arsenal have shown serious interest in the France defender as an alternative to their main target, Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa.
Aston Villa are demanding more than 75m euros for Konsa, a figure Arsenal consider excessive. That has encouraged the London club to examine other options, with Kounde’s ability to operate both centrally and at right-back making him an appealing candidate.
Barcelona have already seen Ronald Araujo leave and hope to receive about 40m euros from the sale of Marc Casado in the coming days. Kounde could provide another significant source of income, despite having recently extended his contract with Barcelona until 2030.
All current indications suggest Kounde wants to remain at the Catalan club. However, he still has a conversation to hold with Flick, who has already clarified the positions of several other players, including Araujo and Casado.
Kounde’s influence faded during last season and Flick appears ready to place his trust in Eric Garcia at centre-back from the outset. That could affect the defender’s position, although Barcelona would only approve his departure if they could secure a top-quality replacement.
Arsenal defensive concerns
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is attracted by the prospect of signing a versatile defender who can switch between centre-back and right-back.
The need for defensive cover has become more pressing because of problems at the start of the season. William Saliba is out indefinitely with a back issue, while Jurrien Timber continues to experience chronic problems in the thigh area that make it difficult for him to play consistently.
Barcelona are therefore waiting to see how the situation develops while preparing for several possible outcomes. They would be willing to consider a substantial bid for Kounde, provided they could bring in a replacement of the required standard.
Flick could use Cancelo on the left, with his arrival now considered close, while Alejandro Balde would also provide an option in that position. On the right, Barcelona have Eric Garcia and promising youngster Xavi Espart, who has clearly impressed the German coach.
Paris St-Germain are also looking for a high-level defender, but the French club have not yet made significant progress in that area. The indications are that they may instead choose a young player with major potential.
Bayern Munich also have Kounde on their list of possible targets, although the German club currently have a greater need to sell players than to make new signings.
The final decision will rest with Kounde. He has returned to group training and is awaiting clarity from Flick about his position in the squad. His high market value and contract running until 2030 give Barcelona considerable negotiating strength if Arsenal or another interested club makes a formal approach.
