LaLiga heavyweights Barcelona are on the lookout for a high-profile attacking signing this summer, with sporting director Deco compiling a shortlist of potential targets.
Among the players under consideration are Luis Diaz, Rafael Leao, and Alexander Isak; however, Nico Williams, a Spanish international of Ghanaian heritage, is not a priority for the Catalan club this time around.
Last summer, Barcelona made a determined effort to acquire Williams from Athletic Club, but the 22-year-old ultimately opted to stay with his current team.
Although he remains on Barcelona’s radar for 2025, the club faces stiff competition from Premier League teams, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, who have placed Williams high on their wish lists.
Recent reports suggest that Barcelona’s enthusiasm for Williams has diminished significantly. The club was left disappointed by his decision to turn down their offer last year.
Additionally, they now view him as being at a lower level, especially since his performance this season with Athletic has not been particularly remarkable.
Williams has three goals and six assists in 29 games across all competitions.
Relations between Barcelona and Athletic Club have further complicated the situation.
Last summer, Athletic vocally criticized Barcelona’s interest in Williams, even threatening legal action if the Catalans attempted to activate his release clause.
Moreover, the club has been one of the clubs openly critical of Barcelona in the ongoing Negreira case, which has further strained their relationship.
While Athletic Club is keen to retain Williams for the long term, they may face challenges in keeping him if Premier League clubs pursue him aggressively.
