La Liga president Javier Tebas has reiterated that FC Barcelona are not in a financial position to register Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, casting further doubt on a potential transfer that has yet to be finalised.
Williams, who is of Ghanaian descent, has been heavily linked with a move to the Catalan giants this summer following an impressive run of form for club and country.
Despite agreeing personal terms and showing a willingness to join the Spanish champions, uncertainty remains over whether Barcelona can comply with league regulations to register him.
Tebas, speaking on the first day of Spain’s official player registration window, was unequivocal about the current state of play.
“As of today, Barca would not be able to register Nico Williams,” he said. “The registration period for players started today, and right now I wouldn’t be able to do it.”
Barcelona have indicated they are exploring the sale of several fringe players to free up space on their wage bill and make room for Williams, but concrete moves have yet to materialise.
The club’s struggles with La Liga’s financial fair play rules have long been a stumbling block for new arrivals.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the situation and are reportedly preparing a last-minute attempt to sign the Spain international.
Reports suggest Williams is now seeking firm guarantees about his eligibility to play should he commit to Barcelona, as the Bundesliga giants prepare a lucrative counter-offer to tempt him away.
