South Africa midfielder Gabriela Salgado is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a horrific injury in the semifinal clash against Nigeria.
The midfielder had to be subbed off in the 84th minute due to the injury setback as the Banyana Banyana fell short 2-1 to the Super Falcons at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Rasheedat Ajibade gave the West African Nation a first-half lead before Linda Motlhalo responded after the break.
However, Michelle Alozie won it late for her team with a fortuitous long-range strike to help Nigeria set up a final with the hosts, who beat Ghana in a second game.
However, SAFA Chief Medical Officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya has provided an update confirming the latter picked up a serious injury.
“Gabby had a serious injury during the game and was rushed to hospital immediately after the incident for further assessment and management. The extent of the injury is unknown at this stage, and we will give an update once all the facts are known,” he said.
South Africa will now shift their attention to the third place match against West African outfit, Ghana.
