Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has shared his opinion on the 2019 Ballon d’Or ahead of the official announcement on December 2. Now managing Glasgow Rangers, Gerrard revealed his choice, which surprisingly is not fellow Liverpool star Sadio Mané.
“I’m Messi’s biggest fan. But if you look at the consistency with which Virgil van Dijk has played this year, including winning the Champions League with Liverpool, then in my opinion he deserves the Ballon d’Or,” Gerrard stated following Rangers’ Europa League draw against Feyenoord.
Gerrard’s endorsement highlights Van Dijk’s impact at both defensive and team levels, acknowledging the Dutch defender’s key role in Liverpool’s European success and consistent performances throughout the season.
