Ballon d’Or Controversy: Platini Targeted by Ronaldo Fans in Bizarre Protest
In an unusual turn of events, UEFA president Michel Platini has become the target of Cristiano Ronaldo’s supporters following his public endorsement of Manuel Neuer for the 2014 Ballon d’Or. Platini had stated in November that the winner of the award should be a World Cup champion, thereby indirectly dismissing Ronaldo and Messi’s chances.
This sparked widespread backlash among fans of the Real Madrid star. In response, a Portuguese fan campaign titled “Let’s Kick Platini Out!” was launched. It culminated in a symbolic protest outside Platini’s alleged residence in the Paris suburbs. A group of supporters threw 61 footballs onto the property, each marked with the minute and opponent of every goal Ronaldo scored in 2014.
The act, captured in a YouTube video, appears to be part protest, part publicity stunt, though it highlights the passionate global support Ronaldo commands.
Tensions had already escalated earlier when Ronaldo ignored Platini during the Club World Cup, apparently still irritated by the UEFA boss’s comments.
Ballon d’Or Verdict Nears
As the Ballon d’Or ceremony looms on Monday, January 12, 2015, the debate intensifies:
Cristiano Ronaldo: 61 goals in 2014
Lionel Messi: World Cup finalist, key year with Barcelona
Manuel Neuer: World Cup winner and standout goalkeeper
The final verdict will determine not just the best player of 2014—but possibly the fallout from Platini’s preference.
