Zahir Belounis, the Franco-Algerian footballer, has been released after being stranded in Qatar for almost a year due to a conflict with his club, Al-Jaish. Belounis stated that the issue was with the club and not with Qatar itself. He had filed a complaint against the club in February 2013 after they stopped paying his salary in 2012. Following the complaint, he faced difficulties obtaining an exit visa, preventing him from leaving the country. His case sheds light on the controversial Kafala system in Gulf countries, where employees are essentially the property of their sponsors.
