Azzedine Ounahi’s next move in focus as Ajax battle European and Saudi suitors
Azzedine Ounahi is edging closer to leaving Girona this summer, with clubs from across Europe and Saudi Arabia showing interest in the Morocco midfielder.
Ounahi returned to Girona after being given a period of rest following his involvement with Morocco at the World Cup. However, his performances during the previous season, combined with his impressive displays for the national team, have attracted attention from a number of clubs in Spain and beyond.
The 26-year-old has become an important member of Morocco’s squad and is regarded as one of the main figures in the team known as the Atlas Lions. His form has now placed him at the centre of a transfer battle involving clubs from several different leagues.
According to Moroccan website Le360 Sport, Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, English club Hull City and Dutch giants Ajax are all interested in signing Ounahi during the current summer transfer window.
The report also says Atletico Madrid have joined the list of clubs monitoring the Morocco international. Ajax are currently considered the leading candidates to complete a deal for the midfielder, although no transfer has yet been finalised.
Ounahi’s name has also been linked with Barcelona and Manchester City this summer, according to reports in the Spanish media. Those links, however, have not developed into formal offers for the player.
The midfielder’s profile rose significantly after his performances for Morocco at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. His displays in an Atlas Lions shirt have helped make him a target for several leading European clubs, while interest from Saudi Arabia has added another possible destination to his list of options.
For now, Ajax appear to have the strongest position in the race for Ounahi. The Dutch club are competing with Atletico Madrid, Hull City and Al-Ittihad for his signature, while the reported interest from Barcelona and Manchester City has yet to result in an official approach.
Ounahi is therefore expected to be one of the players attracting considerable attention before the summer transfer window closes. His next move could see him remain in Europe with Ajax or Atletico Madrid, move to England with Hull City, or take up an offer from the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ittihad.
Despite the growing list of potential destinations, Girona remain the club Ounahi is currently set to leave. The midfielder’s performances for both club and country have ensured that his future is now being closely watched by sides across Europe and Saudi Arabia, with Ajax reportedly closest to securing an agreement.
