Azzedine Ounahi still far from full fitness, says Girona coach Michel
Girona coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez Medina, known as Michel, has provided an update on Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi following his return to action in the 1-1 La Liga draw against Levante UD in the 27th round of the Spanish top flight.
Michel revealed that Ounahi was not originally scheduled to play in the match due to concerns over his physical condition. The Moroccan midfielder had experienced discomfort during training last Friday, prompting Girona’s medical staff to advise caution.
“Ounahi is still far from full fitness,” Michel said, noting that the player has been sidelined for over two months following a tear in his left calf muscle sustained while training with the Moroccan national team during the Africa Cup of Nations “Morocco 2025.”
The coach explained that Ounahi had to leave Friday’s session because of a hamstring spasm, which raised concerns over a potential relapse if he exerted himself too soon.
Despite the initial plan to rest him completely, Ounahi featured for approximately 27 minutes against Levante. Michel stressed that his limited participation was necessary to address the team’s tactical needs, but added that the midfielder will require a gradual reintegration into regular play to regain full fitness and deliver his best performances for Girona.
The coach confirmed that medical examinations showed no serious injury, only a muscle spasm. Nevertheless, a cautious approach is essential to prevent further setbacks as Ounahi continues his recovery.
Ounahi’s return, even in a limited role, is a positive sign for Girona, who are counting on the Moroccan international to strengthen their midfield in the final stretch of the La Liga season.
