Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi, the Olympique de Marseille (OM) midfielder, expressed the unwavering commitment of the Moroccan national team to give their all during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, in Ivory Coast, the tournament holds significant importance for the Atlas Lions.
In an exclusive interview with the “RMC Sport” channel, Ounahi highlighted the team’s ambitions for the upcoming competition, emphasizing the primary goal of being fully dedicated to the AFCON.
While refraining from explicitly stating the objective to win the tournament, Ounahi asserted that providing a 100% effort is paramount.
As the semi-finalists of the 2022 World Cup, Ounahi acknowledged that Morocco has become “the team to beat” in international football.
He noted the perceptible shift in attitudes towards the team, with opponents eager to challenge the Atlas Lions in both friendly matches and official competitions.
The midfielder emphasized that this increased competition serves as motivation for the team to maintain focus and dedication in every game.
Ounahi also highlighted the anticipation within the Moroccan community for the AFCON, emphasizing its unique significance as the 2025 edition will be hosted in Morocco.
A successful campaign in Ivory Coast would serve as a valuable advantage for the team when they host the tournament on home soil in 2025.
After overcoming a back injury that kept him away from the field in the fall, Ounahi expressed confidence in his return to form, aided by the series of matches played with OM.
He affirmed that the experience gained with Marseille will contribute to his readiness and ensure that he is 100% prepared for the upcoming continental tournament.
Since joining OM in January from Angers, the 23-year-old midfielder has featured in 26 matches for Marseille.
Despite facing challenges such as a broken toe that affected his appearances last season, Ounahi is poised to make a significant impact during AFCON 2023.
