CR Belouizdad’s preparations for the highly anticipated Algerian Cup final against USM Alger have been clouded by uncertainty surrounding the availability of star forward Aymen Mahious, whose eligibility has been cast into doubt by a recent FIFA directive.
The striker’s loan spell from Swiss side Yverdon Sport officially concludes on June 30, leaving his status in limbo just days before the July 5 final at Nelson-Mandela Stadium.
Although Mahious is technically a free agent—following the relegation of Yverdon to Switzerland’s second tier, which automatically nullified his contract that was initially set to run until 2026—Algerian league regulations complicate his return to domestic competition.
Ordinarily, players whose contracts expire on June 30 are eligible for temporary clearance to participate in the Cup final, as evidenced by similar exemptions granted during previous editions.
However, Mahious’s situation is markedly different due to his international loan.
FIFA rules stipulate that players returning from a loan abroad must obtain specific clearance from the global governing body before they can compete in their home league again.
“Unlike the other players involved in this final, Mahious’s case requires a distinct exemption from FIFA,” an official close to the matter told local press. “Without this authorisation, he cannot take to the pitch.”
In light of the situation, CR Belouizdad have urgently reached out to the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which has in turn submitted an official request to FIFA, seeking expedited approval that would allow the 27-year-old striker to participate in what is shaping up to be a defining match for the club.
Mahious’s absence would be a significant blow for CR Belouizdad, given his decisive performances this season and experience on the big stage.
The forward’s influence has been instrumental in Belouizdad’s Cup run, and fans had expected him to lead the line in the final showdown with city rivals USM Alger.
The FAF remains hopeful that a positive response will arrive in time, but the clock is ticking.
With less than a week remaining, the uncertainty over Mahious’s status is casting a long shadow over CR Belouizdad’s preparations.
For now, both club and supporters wait anxiously for FIFA’s verdict, which could ultimately determine whether Mahious is granted the opportunity to feature in one of the most important matches of his domestic career.
