Tunisia edged out by Austria after resilient display in friendly defeat

Austria secured a 1 0 victory over Tunisia in Vienna on Monday evening, overcoming a second half challenge after being reduced to 10 men in a closely contested World Cup preparation match.

The fixture served as an important test for both sides ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with Austria emerging victorious thanks to a second half strike from Marcel Sabitzer.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who had inherited the captain’s armband, finished calmly with a side footed effort to put the hosts ahead and ultimately settle the contest.

Tunisia, coached by Sabri Lamouchi, responded positively after falling behind and produced an encouraging reaction as they searched for an equaliser.

The visitors showed determination and commitment throughout the closing stages and pushed forward in an attempt to rescue a result.

However, Austria remained organised and disciplined despite their numerical disadvantage. The home side defended resolutely in front of their supporters in Vienna and succeeded in protecting their lead until the final whistle.

While Tunisia will take positives from aspects of their performance, the result went in favour of Austria, who demonstrated resilience and defensive solidity to claim a narrow 1 0 victory.
