Aurelio Buta: Portugal-Angola right-back linked with move to Sao Paulo

Portugal-Angola defender Aurelio Buta, currently without a club, is being linked with a move to Brazilian Serie A side Sao Paulo. The 29-year-old right-back, whose market value is listed at €2m, is a free agent after his short spell at Copenhagen came to an end at the start of July.

Buta spent the second half of last season in Denmark after joining Copenhagen from Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer in January 2026. Before that, he had a loan spell in Ligue 1 with Stade Reims during the 2024-25 campaign, returning to Frankfurt at the end of that season.

The full-back built his reputation in Belgium with Royal Antwerp, where he became a regular in the Jupiler Pro League and helped the club win the Belgian Cup in 2020. He later moved to Frankfurt in 2022, also on a free transfer, and went on to feature in the Bundesliga as well as the DFB-Pokal, where he was part of the squad that finished German cup runners-up in 2022-23.

Across his time in Belgium and Germany, Buta has accumulated significant top-flight experience, including more than 50 Bundesliga appearances and close to 100 in the Jupiler Pro League, as well as outings in European competition.

With no transfer fee required, Sao Paulo are assessing Buta as a low-risk option to reinforce the right side of their defence, and discussions over a potential deal are understood to be at an exploratory stage while the player weighs up his next move as a free agent.
