Aubrey Modiba helping Thabang Matuludi settle at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says he is helping new team-mate Thabang Matuludi adapt to life at the club after the right-back made an immediate impact on his debut.

The 27-year-old joined Sundowns during the current transfer window and played his first match for the Brazilians against Al Ahli Saudi in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup on Saturday.

Matuludi impressed after coming on in the second half, setting up Nuno Santos to score the winning goal as Sundowns claimed their first trophy of the season.

Modiba was pleased to see his fellow Limpopo-born player contribute so quickly. He also revealed that the pair are roommates, giving him the opportunity to support Matuludi as he becomes familiar with the squad and the club’s methods.

“You know I’m so happy for him, he came and he’s sharing a room with me,” said Modiba.

“I’m treating him so that he can easily settle in well in the team. He came just last week, so he’s still getting used to how we do things and how we play.

“I was also happy for him that he got an assist today. I’m proud and hopeful that he can help us more going forward.”

Matuludi’s first appearance came only a week after his arrival at Sundowns, meaning he is still adjusting to the team’s style of play and daily routines.

His involvement with the club will now be followed by international duty. The defender has been included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea, as well as an international friendly against Egypt.

Modiba believes Matuludi can make a further contribution to Sundowns as the season progresses, having already provided an assist in his opening appearance.
