Aubameyang Vows Return to Saint-Étienne: “It’s Still My Club”
Dortmund — Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has reaffirmed his desire to return to his former club Saint-Étienne, expressing continued affection for the French side where he made his breakthrough.
The Gabon international, who joined Dortmund in 2013, previously spent two successful seasons with Les Verts and credits the club with launching his career at the highest level. Despite now starring in the Bundesliga, Aubameyang told French newspaper Le Progrès that a return to the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard remains firmly in his plans.
“I haven’t changed my mind. I’ll come back and play here,” he said. “I hope I can play European Cup matches at Geoffroy-Guichard like they are doing this season.”
Saint-Étienne, who are competing in Europe this season, continue to hold a special place in Aubameyang’s heart. His performances with the French club between 2011 and 2013 earned him recognition as one of Ligue 1’s rising stars, eventually leading to his transfer to the Bundesliga.
Now a key figure at Dortmund, Aubameyang still follows the fortunes of his former teammates closely. Despite a difficult start to the current campaign for Saint-Étienne, the striker remains optimistic about their prospects.
“They shouldn’t worry about it—they just need to focus. It’s not a problem; things will come back,” he said. “They’re creating opportunities, and that’s a positive point. They just have to keep moving forward.”
Aubameyang’s continued support is likely to be welcomed by Saint-Étienne fans, who remember his time at the club fondly. His pace, flair, and clinical finishing helped reignite the club’s competitive edge during his spell, and his commitment to returning has only strengthened his legacy in green.
While no timeline has been given for a potential comeback, Aubameyang’s message was clear: Saint-Étienne remains more than just a former club—it’s a future destination.
