Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, one of Arsenal’s top scorers this season with 22 goals, credits his rise to global prominence to his formative years at Saint-Étienne. Before truly making his mark, the Gabonese striker spent time on loan at various clubs, but it was at Les Verts that his career began to flourish.
In an interview with Arsenal’s official website, Aubameyang reflected on the pivotal role the French club played in his development. “I joined Saint-Étienne and everything changed. Christophe Galtier gave me a lot of confidence when I was there. I had always been on loan, but after those first six months, the club bought me and I was really happy. That’s when I said: Okay, now I have to improve, work even harder than I did before, and I did,” he said.
Off the pitch, Aubameyang’s life was evolving as well. The birth of his first son, Curtys, motivated him to become the best player he could be. During his time at Saint-Étienne, he won the Coupe de la Ligue, scored Gabon’s first-ever Olympic goal, and became the top scorer at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Reflecting on setbacks, he noted, “I missed a penalty against Mali in the quarter-final shootout, and that’s probably my worst memory as a footballer. It was a bad moment, but it’s allowed me to create a lot of good moments since.”
Since leaving Saint-Étienne, Aubameyang has established himself among the world’s elite strikers. His record speaks for itself: 114 goals and 28 assists in 151 matches with Borussia Dortmund, and 40 goals with 9 assists in 64 matches for Arsenal. Notably, he has become the first player in history to win the Golden Boot in both the Bundesliga and the Premier League, cementing his status as one of the most prolific forwards of his generation.
Aubameyang’s journey underscores the importance of early opportunities and guidance, showing how confidence, hard work, and personal growth can transform a talented player into a global football icon. From his breakthrough at Saint-Étienne to his achievements in Germany and England, the Gabonese striker’s career is a testament to perseverance, ambition, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
