Atletico Madrid sign Canada record scorer Jonathan David on loan from Juventus

Atletico Madrid have signed Canada striker Jonathan David on a one-season loan from Juventus, with the deal announced shortly before the summer transfer window closes.

The move comes as Atletico continue to face uncertainty over Julian Alvarez, who wants to join Barcelona. No agreement has yet been reached between Atletico and the Argentina forward, increasing the importance of David’s arrival as the Spanish club strengthen their attacking options.

Atletico confirmed the transfer on their official website, saying David would spend the season at the club after moving from Juventus. The 25-year-old joined the Italian side at the beginning of last season on a free transfer from Lille.

David made 47 appearances for Juventus and scored eight goals, while also providing five assists. His final appearance for the club came on Saturday in their Serie A victory against Parma.

He started that match but was substituted in the 57th minute, before Juventus went on to score both of their goals. He leaves the club after just one season, having initially arrived in Turin following a highly productive spell in France.

David began his European career with Belgian club Gent in 2018. During two seasons there, he scored 37 goals before earning a move to Lille.

The forward spent five seasons with Lille, playing 232 matches and scoring 109 goals. He also contributed 31 assists during his time at the French club.

With Lille, David won both the French league title and the French Super Cup. Those successes helped establish him as one of the leading young forwards in European football before his move to Juventus in the summer of 2025.

At international level, David is Canada’s all-time leading scorer, with 42 goals for his country. Three of those goals came at the most recent World Cup.

Atletico’s move for David gives the club another established goalscorer as they continue to assess their attacking line. The Madrid side have not yet reached an agreement over Alvarez, amid the player’s reported desire to move to Barcelona.

David’s loan therefore provides Atletico with an immediate attacking addition before the transfer deadline, while his record with Lille and Canada offers the club a proven source of goals. His arrival also marks the latest stage of a European career that has taken him from Gent to Lille and then Juventus.

The Canada international will now continue that career in La Liga, joining Atletico Madrid for the coming season on loan from Juventus.
