Atletico Madrid revive interest in Ademola Lookman; begin talks to sign Nigerian star
Atlético Madrid have reignited their pursuit of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman and have reportedly opened talks with his representatives over a potential January transfer from Atalanta.
The 28-year-old striker endured a difficult summer after a failed move to Inter Milan. Atalanta turned down Inter’s offer, which led to tensions between Lookman, the club’s management, and some sections of the fanbase. The fallout saw him temporarily sidelined and struggling to recapture the impressive form that made him one of Serie A’s standout attackers in previous seasons.
Lookman’s dip in form has coincided with Atalanta’s own struggles under former coach Ivan Juric, who was recently dismissed. The Nigerian international is now said to be pushing for a move when the transfer window reopens in January.
Atlético Madrid, who have long admired the forward, are believed to be ready to meet Atalanta’s €50 million valuation.
With fresh financial backing from Apollo Sports Capital, the club’s new majority shareholders, the Spanish giants are expected to be more aggressive in the transfer market.
Should the deal materialise, Lookman could become one of Atlético’s marquee signings of the winter window as Diego Simeone looks to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the 2025/26 season.
