Atletico Madrid rely on past transfer lessons as Julian Alvarez saga with Barcelona continues

Atletico Madrid have seen their preferred outcome from the summer transfer window, with Julian Alvarez remaining at the club, but they expect speculation linking the forward with Barcelona to continue throughout the season.

The Madrid club have maintained the same position since the story first intensified and have shown no sign of changing it. Alvarez had expressed a desire to leave while involved with Argentina at the World Cup, but Atletico have continued to count on the player as part of their squad.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the issue has been considered settled inside the Wanda Metropolitano for several days. Alvarez has returned to training after missing a number of sessions because of an illness that was not disclosed.

Barcelona’s announcement that they had signed Gabriel Jesus did not ease the uncertainty around Atletico’s striker. Instead, it became clear that the matter is likely to remain unresolved. That has not surprised Atletico, who believe the subject will follow them throughout the campaign regardless of how the situation eventually develops.

There is also an expectation within Atletico’s offices that any meetings with Barcelona could reignite the issue. Champions League and cup fixtures, as well as direct contests for trophies such as the Super Cup, could all lead to renewed messages connecting Alvarez with Barcelona, as happened last season.

Atletico understand that each fresh episode could further damage their relationship with Barcelona. Their message to the Catalan club remains the one delivered throughout the summer: Alvarez’s release clause is €490m.

Atletico chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin made the club’s stance clear in his most recent comments. The position is not expected to change in the winter transfer window, next season or even in the years ahead.

Speaking at the Champions League draw a week ago, Gil Marin said: “I have been in football for more than 30 years. This is my word, and it is one of the few things I have. As long as I am chief executive, Alvarez will not move to Barcelona. That is certain.”

That statement reflects the position being repeated inside the club. Atletico see their resistance as a strategic decision and a demonstration that they will not give up their leading players when they believe they can protect them.

Some observers have questioned whether Alvarez could continue at Atletico if he remains unhappy, given the size of his transfer and his current salary. However, the club can point to previous examples in its history.

Thomas Lemar was once Atletico’s most expensive signing and later spent long periods on the substitutes’ bench without making a major impact. He remained one of the club’s highest earners, yet Atletico did not collapse financially as a result.

The cases of Saul and Victor Machin, known as Vitolo, offer further comparisons with Lemar in terms of transfer cost, wages and status within the squad.

Atletico therefore believe they have enough evidence from the past to withstand the challenge if Alvarez maintains his position or if Barcelona renew their interest.
