Atletico Madrid reject Victor Osimhen move as Julian Alvarez remains key figure

Atletico Madrid have turned down the opportunity to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen after deciding to continue building their attack around Argentina forward Julian Alvarez, according to reports in Spain.

Osimhen, who currently plays for Turkish champions Galatasaray, was offered to Atletico during the summer transfer window, with intermediaries reportedly proposing a €75 million deal for one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.

However, Mundo Deportivo reports that the Spanish club rejected the opportunity because they do not have the financial capacity to complete such a significant transfer at this stage.

Osimhen willing to lower salary for Atletico move

The 27-year-old Nigerian reportedly expressed his desire to join Atletico and was prepared to accept a reduction in his salary to make the move happen.

Osimhen currently earns a lucrative contract at Galatasaray, where he benefits from Turkey’s tax advantages for foreign residents.

The Super Eagles striker remains tied to the Turkish club until 2029 after making a major impact since arriving in Istanbul.

His reported interest in Atletico is also linked to his admiration for manager Diego Simeone.

After facing Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last January, Osimhen praised the Argentine coach and the identity he has built at the club.

“I admire him, I have always been a fan of his coach… I met him twice… They play an attacking style and have a clear identity.”

He added:

“The coach has been here for many years, so the players are used to his style of play. I am very impressed with the match we played, because Atletico are one of the best teams in the world, and a draw with them shows that you are on the right track.”

Alvarez blocks potential move

Despite Osimhen’s interest, Atletico Madrid decided against pursuing the deal after assessing their current attacking options.

Reports indicate that the role Osimhen would have filled is already occupied by Julian Alvarez, with the club fully committed to the Argentina international.

The Rojiblancos are not considering selling Alvarez, and his importance to Simeone’s plans was another factor behind their decision to end discussions over a possible Osimhen transfer.

Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham also linked

Atletico were not the only club approached regarding Osimhen’s availability.

Reports suggest the Nigerian striker was also offered to Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham as he considers his next move.

Tottenham reportedly submitted an offer worth more than €55 million, but Galatasaray rejected the proposal as it fell below their valuation.

The Turkish club are said to be demanding €75 million before allowing their star striker to leave.

Osimhen’s future remains one of the major transfer stories of the summer, with several European clubs continuing to monitor the situation.
