Atletico Madrid host Bayern Munich at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday evening in a pivotal match in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
Diego Simeone’s side arrive in outstanding domestic form, having won their past seven La Liga matches. However, their European campaign has been held back by a recent draw against Stuttgart, leaving Atletico 16th in the standings and still searching for a place among the leading teams.
Atletico will be without defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who is suspended. They will nevertheless look to the passionate home support at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to help turn around their continental fortunes against one of Europe’s most powerful sides.
Bayern Munich also travel to Madrid with significant concerns. Vincent Kompany will not be in the dugout after being rested for health reasons, with Aaron Danks taking charge in his place.
The German club’s problems are compounded by a lengthy injury list, particularly in attack. Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Diaz are all unavailable for the match.
Bayern are 14th in the standings, just one place and one point above Atletico Madrid. Their hopes of making progress will rest heavily on Harry Kane, the prolific striker and newly crowned Ballon d’Or winner.
The Munich side will also be seeking a response after a mixed weekend against Dortmund, adding further significance to a meeting between two teams aiming to move up the Champions League table.
