Atletico de Madrid end 49-year wait with Madrid derby win

Atletico de Madrid defeated Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday to secure successive home wins in the Madrid derby in La Liga for the first time since January 1977.

The victory, achieved in the seventh round of the league season, finally ended a run that had stretched for 49 years. Atletico had also beaten Real Madrid at home in last season’s derby, winning 5-2 at the Metropolitano.

The match was marked by several controversial refereeing decisions. Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was sent off, while Atletico were awarded a penalty, an incident that helped Diego Simeone’s side complete the comeback and claim all three points.

According to statistics provider Opta, Atletico registered nine shots on target against Real Madrid. It was the club’s highest total in a La Liga match against their city rivals since Simeone became manager.

Jonathan David also continued his impressive start to life at Atletico de Madrid. The forward, who scored his side’s second goal, has found the net in each of his first three La Liga appearances for the club.

Opta said David was the only player to score in each of his first three matches for Atletico de Madrid in the competition during the 21st century.

He also became the only Atletico de Madrid player in that period to score in both his first La Liga appearance and his first Madrid derby against Real Madrid in the competition.
