Nairobi and Kampala to Host Major IAAF Events in 2017
Great news for East African athletics! The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has officially selected Nairobi and Kampala to host two major international competitions in 2017, according to StarAfrica.
🇰🇪 Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, will organize the World U18 (Cadet) Championships.
🇺🇬 Kampala, the capital of Uganda, will host the prestigious World Cross Country Championships.
Nairobi’s bid was confirmed after the withdrawal of rival candidates such as Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Greensboro (USA), leaving the city as the clear choice.
Meanwhile, Kampala beat out Manama (Bahrain) to secure the right to stage the global cross-country showpiece.
This double announcement confirms East Africa’s growing role in global athletics, especially as a cradle of long-distance talent.
