Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has acknowledged that the club is still searching for a suitable replacement for Ademola Lookman, following the forward’s impressive performance in their 5-0 victory over Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League.
Despite being rested after his weekend goal against Napoli, the reigning African Player of the Year made an impact off the bench.
Introduced at halftime, the Nigerian international showcased his quality by netting Atalanta’s fourth goal in the 90th minute. The goal was the result of excellent interplay between Juan Cuadrado and Charles De Ketelaere, with Cuadrado delivering a pinpoint cross for Lookman to head home.
This marked Lookman’s fourth goal in six Champions League appearances this season, bringing his overall tally to 14 goals in 26 games across all competitions.
Reflecting on his player rotation strategy, which played a pivotal role in the victory, Gasperini admitted that the club still lacks a proper backup for both Lookman and De Ketelaere.
“We need to be cautious because we don’t have replacements for Lookman and De Ketelaere unless Zaniolo evolves into that type of player,” Gasperini said. “The attack is crucial, and having decisive players who can come in and make an impact is essential. Samardzic is improving, and this is a team with potential to grow.”
However, Gasperini hinted that the club might not pursue reinforcements in the transfer market, saying, “It seems the club has no plans to make any moves. My focus is on the present.”
