Aston Villa win race for PSG prospect Ibrahim Mbaye in €55m deal

Ibrahim Mbaye has officially left Paris Saint-Germain to join Aston Villa, with the Premier League club completing a €55m transfer for the 18-year-old Senegalese winger.

The move brings an end to Mbaye’s time at the club where he was developed and gives Aston Villa one of European football’s most closely watched young attacking players. It also represents another significant sale for Paris Saint-Germain during a transfer window in which the French club has generated substantial income from player departures.

Mbaye came through the PSG academy before gradually establishing himself around the first team. Last season, he made 30 appearances for the Parisian side and scored three goals.

Those performances helped raise his profile across Europe, with several major clubs monitoring his progress. Although still only 18, Mbaye had already gained enough first-team experience to attract serious interest in the transfer market.

Liverpool were among the clubs to make progress in their pursuit of the winger. However, negotiations eventually broke down after the Reds declined to meet PSG’s financial demands. The French club had initially hoped to receive €70m for Mbaye.

Aston Villa ultimately secured the agreement and won the competition for his signature. The transfer fee was settled at €55m, allowing Mbaye to begin the next stage of his career in the Premier League.

For the player, the move marks a change of footballing environment after his development at PSG. For Aston Villa, it adds a young Senegalese winger who has already experienced regular senior football despite his age.

Mbaye’s departure also continues PSG’s successful work in generating major transfer revenue. The club’s current transfer activity has been characterised by a series of important exits, with the sale of the academy graduate adding another substantial sum to its earnings.

The winger will now leave French football behind and prepare for life in England. His progress at Aston Villa will be closely followed after a breakthrough campaign in which he played 30 matches and contributed three goals for PSG.

Liverpool’s failure to complete the deal means Aston Villa emerged from a contested transfer as the final destination for Mbaye. PSG did not reach the €70m figure it had originally targeted, but the €55m agreement still secures a sizeable return for a player developed within its own academy.

The transfer has therefore delivered a notable outcome for all three sides involved: Aston Villa have signed a promising young attacker, Mbaye has secured a move to the Premier League, and PSG have completed another valuable sale.
