Aston Villa edge Club Brugge in five-goal Champions League thriller

Aston Villa began their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Club Brugge in a fast-paced opening-day contest in Belgium.

The visitors made the decisive start, moving ahead after 11 minutes when John McGinn finished an attack created by Pau Torres. Aston Villa’s early advantage was short-lived, however, as Club Brugge responded with an equaliser eight minutes later.

Hugo Vetlesen levelled the score in the 19th minute after being set up by Jan Virgili, giving the Belgian side a way back into a match that had already produced three goals in its opening stages.

Aston Villa regained the lead only three minutes later. Emiliano Buendia restored the English club’s advantage in the 22nd minute, ensuring the visitors went back in front during an increasingly open encounter.

The game continued to produce chances and momentum shifts before half-time. With the interval approaching, Aston Villa extended their lead in the 43rd minute when Nicolas Jackson converted Pau Torres’ delivery. It was the second assist of the match for Pau Torres, who had earlier supplied John McGinn for the opening goal.

That goal gave Aston Villa what appeared to be a valuable two-goal cushion at the break, but Club Brugge refused to allow the match to slip away. The home side returned from half-time with renewed purpose and reduced the deficit shortly after the hour mark.

A VAR review in the 59th minute identified a foul by Joaquin Seys, resulting in a penalty for Club Brugge. Nicolo Tresoldi took responsibility from the spot and converted in the 61st minute, bringing the score to 3-2 and setting up a tense final period.

The penalty ensured the Belgian side remained within touching distance, while Aston Villa were forced to defend their narrow advantage for the remainder of the contest. Club Brugge’s response created pressure in the closing stages, but the visitors managed to hold on.

The final minutes were particularly tense, with two yellow cards shown to each side as the intensity of the match continued through to the final whistle. Despite Club Brugge’s second-half fightback, Aston Villa protected their lead and secured victory on the opening night of their European campaign.
