Chelsea officially announced the signing of Kurt Zouma on January 31, securing his services for the next five years. Despite being loaned back to his former club Saint-Étienne, Zouma shared details about the pivotal phone call he received from José Mourinho.
“Initially, there was a call from Mr. Mourinho, as I had been informed. He spoke to me in French, and I understood everything he said. He made it clear that he wanted me in the team. I immediately seized this opportunity…” Zouma recounted.
He continued, revealing Mourinho’s mention of Raphaël Varane during their conversation: “He mentioned Varane to me as an example. It stuck with me. José Mourinho is undeniably one of the greatest coaches in the world. Moreover, I’ve been a Chelsea fan since I was a child.”
Zouma’s account highlights the significance of Mourinho’s personal outreach and the admiration he holds for both the manager and the club he has supported since his youth.
