Assane Diao, the talented young striker for Como, finds himself at a crossroads regarding his international future.
Born in Senegal but having spent much of his life in Spain, the 19-year-old must choose between representing the Teranga Lions or La Roja at the senior level.
His father, Moussa Diao, recently addressed the issue in an interview with Spanish outlet AS, shedding light on his son’s hesitation.

Moussa Diao emphasized that his son has not yet made a final decision but will choose the path that brings him the most happiness.
“It is true that he has both options, and he is uncertain. I told him that we would support him no matter what he decides. Whatever choice he makes will be perfect,” said Diao’s father.
While Spain offers familiarity and structured youth development, Senegal presents a different challenge, particularly in terms of integration into the squad.
“In Spain, he has been part of the youth system, and people know who he is. Senegal is another possibility, but it might be more difficult for him to integrate because of the different football culture. However, the most important thing is his personal desire,” he added.
Cesc Fabregas’ influence on Diao’s growth
Diao’s progress in Italy has been closely linked to his coach, Cesc Fabregas, who has played a key role in his development.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder has placed immense trust in the young forward, which has been instrumental in his performances for Como.
“Cesc Fabregas was decisive in bringing Assane to Como, and now he continues to be crucial in his progress. Assane feels his coach’s confidence, and that motivates him to work harder,” Moussa Diao explained.
