Excitement surrounding the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 has taken a vibrant leap forward with the official unveiling of a colourful and spirited lion named Assad as the tournament’s official mascot.

CAF and the Local Organising Committee introduced the character as preparations intensify ahead of what promises to be a landmark edition of Africa’s biggest football showpiece.

Inspired by the Atlas Lion, one of Morocco’s most cherished national emblems, Assad embodies strength, pride and unity. These are values that resonate across Morocco and the African continent. His name, which means “lion” in Arabic, reflects the cultural authenticity and bold spirit the tournament aims to celebrate.

CAF describes Assad as more than just a mascot, positioning him as a central figure in fan engagement throughout AFCON 2025. With youthful energy and an expressive personality, he is expected to bring excitement to stadiums, fan parks and community activities, creating emotional connections with supporters of all ages.

Organisers say children and families will be at the heart of this engagement drive, underscoring their importance to football’s growth and continuity.

Assad’s design features a warm, inviting expression and a colour palette aligned with the AFCON 2025 identity, ensuring a unified and visually striking presence across promotional materials, digital platforms and marketing campaigns. His look draws on the creativity and vibrancy synonymous with African football culture.

CAF has also confirmed that Assad’s role will extend beyond the tournament. He is intended to feature in future CAF programmes, including grassroots initiatives, youth development efforts, school outreach activities and digital storytelling projects.

His continued presence is expected to strengthen CAF’s long-term brand identity while inspiring young footballers and fans across the continent.

The unveiling of Assad marks a significant milestone as Morocco finalises preparations to host a memorable AFCON. With the mascot now introduced, organisers say the competition is firmly on track, promising unity, entertainment and the unmatched passion that defines African football.

The upcoming AFCON 2025 will kick off in Morocco on December 21.
