Radamel Falcao Eyes Real Madrid Move Amid Contract Talks
By BBC Sport Staff
Radamel Falcao’s focus appears to be firmly on a move to Real Madrid, despite currently training with AS Monaco. The Colombian striker is reportedly determined to join the Spanish giants, fueling speculation over a high-profile transfer.
Recent reports from Africa Top Sports revealed a meeting between Falcao and Real Madrid’s president, sparking widespread rumors that the Monegasque forward could soon sign for the European champions. Now, it seems those rumors are closer to reality than ever.
Although Falcao has resumed training with Monaco, sources suggest his mind is set on the Spanish capital, where Real Madrid have reportedly been pursuing the striker’s signature for the past three years. With key logistical matters reportedly resolved, including jersey number assignments, a transfer could be imminent.
According to AS, Falcao is expected to take over the iconic number 9 shirt, currently worn by Karim Benzema. Benzema, who is poised to extend his contract with Real Madrid shortly, would switch to the number 10 jersey—vacant since Mesut Özil’s departure to Arsenal. The number 10 has special significance for Benzema, as it was his number during his early career at Lyon and the shirt he currently wears with the French national team.
When Benzema joined Madrid in 2009, he initially wore number 11, as Cristiano Ronaldo had the number 9. After the legendary Raúl’s departure, Ronaldo switched to number 7, allowing Benzema to inherit the number 9 jersey.
With jersey numbers apparently settled among the squad’s star players, Real Madrid’s focus now turns to negotiating a transfer fee with AS Monaco. If successful, Falcao’s much-anticipated move to the Spanish capital could be finalized soon, adding firepower to Madrid’s attacking lineup.
