ASKO frustrated by missed chances as AS Zam hold firm in CAF Confederation Cup

ASKO went into half-time level at 0-0 with AS Zam in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary first round, despite controlling much of the opening period and creating the clearer opportunities.

The Kondonas established the stronger presence in the match but were unable to turn their dominance into a goal. AS Zam’s defence was placed under sustained pressure, yet ASKO’s finishing repeatedly let them down as the visitors failed to make their superiority count on the scoreboard.

Tchakei Moucheiri had one of the best opportunities of the half when he found himself through on goal. However, he was unable to win his one-on-one battle with the AS Zam goalkeeper, allowing the home side to remain level.

ASKO continued to threaten as the opening period progressed, with their attacking pressure producing further openings. Klidje Claude later sent an effort wide of the target as the Kondonas searched for the breakthrough.

The forward was also involved in an even more promising chance a few minutes later. He was played into the penalty area after AS Zam’s defence appeared to have been exposed, but his attempted finish went badly wrong. With the goal seemingly within reach, Klidje Claude failed to make proper contact with the ball and the chance went begging.

That miss summed up ASKO’s first-half performance: impressive in terms of possession and attacking initiative, but lacking the composure required in front of goal. AS Zam, despite being under pressure for long periods, survived without conceding and reached the interval with the score still 0-0.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced at the halfway stage of the first leg. ASKO have shown enough to suggest they can create problems for AS Zam, but their failure to convert their opportunities means they have not secured the advantage their first-half display might have warranted.

For the Kondonas, the central challenge is now clear. They must find greater precision in the final moments of their attacks after wasting several chances that could have changed the contest before the break. AS Zam, meanwhile, have been given the opportunity to remain in contention after resisting ASKO’s pressure and keeping a clean sheet through the opening 45 minutes.
