Asamoah Gyan has called on Arsenal to act swiftly in offering a contract extension to Ghana international Thomas Partey, warning that the midfielder’s outstanding performances this season warrant immediate recognition.
The former Ghana captain expressed disbelief at the club’s delay in initiating talks, insisting Partey has been a vital cog in Mikel Arteta’s side and one of their most influential players throughout the campaign.
“Why are the negotiations being delayed?” Gyan questioned. “A new contract for Thomas should not even be a topic for debate.
He has arguably been their best player this season and certainly their best midfielder.”
Partey, whose current deal expires on 30 June 2025, has found his form in a pivotal year for Arsenal.
The 31-year-old was instrumental in both legs of the Champions League quarter-finals against Real Madrid, helping the Gunners reach the semi-finals for the first time in over a decade.
He has also played a crucial role in guiding the team to consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League over the past two seasons.
Gyan, who made his mark in the English Premier League during his time with Sunderland, believes Partey’s performances on the biggest stages prove his worth to Arsenal, not only as a key midfielder but as a leader in the squad.
“For me, he absolutely deserves a new contract, without question,” Gyan continued. “He’s shown this season that he can stay fit, he covers a lot of ground, and the team is clearly stronger with him in the lineup.”
Despite his growing influence, Partey’s future at the Emirates remains uncertain. Without a renewal agreement in place, the midfielder could leave on a free transfer next summer. Gyan has warned that should Arsenal hesitate any longer, Europe’s elite clubs could swoop in.
“I can guarantee you he can still perform at the highest level in Europe,” said Gyan. “And if Arsenal delays, of course, other big clubs will be ready to make a move. Arsenal needs Thomas, not just for now, but for the seasons ahead.”
Partey, who has made 161 appearances and scored nine goals for Arsenal since arriving from Atlético de Madrid in 2020, has long been regarded as one of Ghana’s finest exports.
His club career also includes stints with Mallorca and Almería, and he made over 250 appearances in Spain before his move to England.
Reports from Africafoot suggest Atlético de Madrid may be interested in reuniting with their former player should he become available, while Barcelona are also reportedly monitoring his situation closely.
With just over a year remaining on his current contract, Arsenal face a decisive few months. Whether they act quickly to secure Partey’s services or risk losing him to another European heavyweight remains to be seen.
For Gyan, however, the answer is clear — Arsenal must not let one of their most dependable performers slip away.
