AS Roma are reportedly giving serious consideration to a sensational move to re-sign Mohamed Salah during the upcoming winter transfer window, which opens in January.
However, the potential deal is widely viewed as highly unrealistic, with the Egyptian forward’s current salary at Liverpool presenting a major stumbling block for the Serie A club.
Salah earns a reported £400,000 per week at Anfield, amounting to £24 million annually, making him the second-highest paid player in the English Premier League behind Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.
Even in a scenario where Salah agrees to take a significant pay cut, and with the possibility of a loan arrangement, Roma would still be required to cover around €12 million in wages, a figure that would place enormous strain on the club’s finances and complicate any negotiations.
As a result, Roma are understood to be exploring alternative attacking options for January, with coach Gian Piero Gasperini reportedly considering other names such as Giacomo Raspadori of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee.
Against that backdrop, a Salah return is seen as a surprising and unplanned possibility rather than a concrete transfer strategy.
Salah previously enjoyed a successful spell at Roma after joining the club from Chelsea in 2015.
The Egyptian international spent two seasons in the Italian capital, producing a series of outstanding performances before securing a move to Liverpool in 2017 for a reported fee of €42 million.
