French club AS Monaco have reportedly approached to sign AJ Auxerre’s French-Ivorian defender Clément Akpa, Africasoccer.com has learned.

The Ligue 1 side has been struggling with a series of defensive injuries this season.

While Caio Henrique has recently returned from a minor setback, key defenders Eric Dier, Vanderson, and Christian Mawissa remain sidelined, though Dier and Vanderson are expected back soon.

In response, Monaco have been exploring options for a short-term defensive reinforcement, commonly referred to as a “joker” signing.

The club had previously shown interest in Stade de Reims defender Abdul Koné, but Reims refused to let him leave, and he has since extended his contract.

Attention has now shifted to Akpa, though Auxerre are unwilling to part ways with the 23-year-old outside of the transfer window. Monaco were reportedly ready to make a strong offer, with the player valued at around €10 million by the Ligue 2 side.

The Principality club may revisit their interest in January, but could face competition from FC Nantes as well as unnamed clubs from Spain and Italy.
