Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco are reportedly interested in signing France-born defender of Ivorian descent, Abdoul Koné.

According to French outlet L’Équipe, Monaco have identified the 20-year-old Reims defender as a prime target for an emergency transfer to strengthen their defensive options.

The club has been hit by injuries in central defence, with former Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier the latest to be sidelined for an extended period.

New Monaco head coach Sébastien Pocognoli is said to be keen on implementing a three-man defensive system but currently lacks the personnel to effectively execute his tactical approach.

Koné, who has been a standout performer for Reims, is seen as an ideal fit for the Principality club’s plans.

Negotiations have reportedly begun between Monaco and Reims as the Ligue 1 side pushes to bring Koné to the Stade Louis II.

However, the defender’s current club, who are pushing for promotion back to Ligue 1, are expected to demand a significant fee to part ways with their academy graduate.

Koné was also a target for Olympique Marseille during the summer transfer window, but talks failed to result in an agreement.

If successful, the transfer would add depth and quality to Monaco’s defensive unit as they continue their push in both domestic and European competitions.
