AS FAR have announced that they are taking legal action against Al Ahly following heated incidents that marred their clash at the end of the group stage of the CAF Champions League in Cairo.

The Moroccan club confirmed that it has begun formal legal procedures with the Confederation of African Football in response to what it described as a dangerous and unsporting environment surrounding the match.

In an official statement, the management of the Royal Army Club strongly condemned what it termed unsportsmanlike conduct by sections of Al Ahly supporters.

The club revealed that its delegation was subjected to direct threats, including bottle throwing, which it said posed a serious risk to the safety of players and members of the technical staff.

AS FAR further disclosed that it has formally written to CAF demanding the application of the maximum sanctions provided for under the regulations. The club stressed that its decision was driven by the need to uphold the principles of fair play and to guarantee the safety of all participants in African competitions.

The complaint follows a tense night at Cairo International Stadium, where the first signs of trouble emerged in the closing minutes of the first half. Heated exchanges and physical confrontations between players on the pitch heightened tensions in the stands, forcing the referee to intervene to prevent the situation from spiralling further out of control.

Beyond the events on the field, the crisis has been accompanied by a fierce media battle. Moroccan media outlets reported that Ahmed Hammoudan was attacked by fans while heading towards the dressing room, with claims that bottles were thrown at the delegation amid clashes with security personnel.

Egyptian media, however, presented a different version of events, pointing to alleged provocations by AS FAR players towards the crowd. According to these reports, attempts by some players to move towards the stands following on-field clashes were cited as a trigger for the anger among supporters.

With the official complaint now lodged, attention has turned to CAF’s next steps. The football community awaits the match commissioner’s and referee’s reports, which are expected to guide the decisions of CAF’s disciplinary committee. Financial or administrative sanctions remain a possibility as the governing body seeks to prevent a repeat of such scenes in the knockout stages of the competition.
