AS FAR coach Pedro Gonçalves says his side will adopt a more attacking approach as they prepare to compete for domestic honours in the new Moroccan professional league season.

The Portuguese coach wants the Royal Army to play with high pressure, numerical superiority and initiative while controlling the tempo of matches.

Speaking to Maghreb Arab Press Agency, Gonçalves identified “high pressure, numerical superiority, and initiative” as key principles he wants his team to implement.

Gonçalves wants AS FAR to control games

Gonçalves says his players must avoid rushing their attacks and instead impose their rhythm while maintaining control of matches.

“In the professional league, where every team has the ability to create problems, intensity and sharpness must be combined with tactical intelligence,” he said.

The coach wants to build a proactive side capable of spending more time in the opposition half and creating more attacking opportunities without compromising the team’s defensive organisation.

He also plans to retain the main features of AS FAR’s existing style while adding new tactical elements to make their performances more varied and allow the team to exploit spaces created by opponents.

Continuity key to AS FAR’s development

Gonçalves believes continuity will be important as he introduces his ideas, with a large part of last season’s squad remaining at the club.

That, he says, gives him a group of players already familiar with the demands of AS FAR and provides a foundation for developing his tactical approach.

New arrivals, however, face the challenge of adapting to the club and the coach’s methods.

“Adaptation poses a particular challenge for new players who are required to discover a new style of play and new requirements,” Gonçalves said.

Squad rotation part of Gonçalves’ plans

The Portuguese coach also identified squad rotation as an important part of his strategy for the season.

He wants every member of the squad to remain ready to contribute whenever called upon as AS FAR compete across their commitments.

“Every player must be fully prepared to defend the team’s colors whenever he is asked to do so,” Gonçalves said.
