AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has told his players to prepare for an aggressive Stellenbosch FC performance when the sides meet in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday.
The match will kick off at 18:00, with Zwane expecting Gavin Hunt’s side to attack from the outset on home soil.
AmaZulu secured their place in the last eight with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium. Hendrick Ekstein’s penalty decided the tie in difficult conditions at the scorching venue.
Usuthu will arrive in Stellenbosch having won their past six matches in all competitions. Their latest success came last weekend, when they beat KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows 1-0 at home.
Zwane made clear that he is aware of the challenge posed by Stellenbosch, particularly after Hunt’s side suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Chippa United in their most recent outing.
The AmaZulu coach previously worked as Hunt’s senior assistant at Kaizer Chiefs. He believes the two teams have comparable attacking principles despite using different formations, meaning the quarter-final could also become a contest of tactical awareness between the two coaches.
Zwane said his players would need to match Stellenbosch’s approach while also finding ways to out-think his former mentor and cope with the threat posed by the Cape Winelands club at their own ground.
AmaZulu focused on maintaining momentum
AmaZulu’s strong beginning to the 2026/27 campaign has increased expectations around the club, with the team currently third in the Betway Premiership.
However, Zwane said the squad’s performances were not simply the result of a temporary run of form. He attributed their consistency to the understanding that has developed within the group.
“Our biggest weapon right now is chemistry,” he said.
“Last season, losing key players dented that progress. Now, from game one up to this point, you see familiar faces. If we change, we change one or two, maybe three if forced.
“Once you establish that identity and understanding, you stand a good chance in any game because you know each other better than other teams do,” added Mangethe.
AmaZulu will now attempt to carry that winning momentum into a difficult cup tie against a Stellenbosch team seeking a response after their defeat by Chippa United.
