Arthur Avom: Union Berlin linked with €20m move for Cameroon and Lorient midfielder

Cameroonian central midfielder Arthur Avom of FC Lorient is reportedly attracting interest from Bundesliga side Union Berlin, with the 21-year-old Ligue 1 player the subject of early transfer speculation over a potential summer move from Brittany to the German capital.

Data from Transfermarkt indicates Union Berlin have been credited with an interest in Avom, who is valued at €20.00m, with the likelihood of a deal presently rated at 20%. There is no recorded contract expiry date for the midfielder at Lorient, which has fuelled discussion that his situation could evolve quickly if talks advance, or even open a pathway towards a free-agent scenario later in his career if no extension is agreed.

Avom, born on 15 December 2004 in Yaoundé, has emerged as one of the more closely watched young midfielders in Ligue 1. Standing at 1.73m and predominantly right-footed, he operates as a central midfielder and wears the number 62 shirt for Lorient. The move being discussed would take him from France’s top flight to the Bundesliga, where Union Berlin continue to look for long-term midfield options.

The Cameroonian has already been on the radar of other European clubs. Previous reports have suggested Premier League interest, with Bournemouth among those monitoring his situation, and a minimum fee of €10m once cited as a starting point for negotiations when his market value was estimated at €15m. His current valuation of €20.00m underlines how his stock has risen over recent seasons.

Avom, who holds Cameroonian nationality and has been capped by his country 14 times with one international goal, built his reputation as an energetic, ball-winning midfielder capable of linking play in the centre of the pitch. For Lorient, he has featured as a central pivot in Ligue 1, offering box-to-box work-rate as well as composure in possession.

In a recent outing for Lorient in Ligue 1 – a tight contest earlier this spring against a fellow relegation-battling side – Avom delivered a disciplined performance in central midfield, helping his team manage transitions in a narrow scoreline encounter. While he did not get on the scoresheet in that match, his contribution off the ball and his passing through the midfield channels were underlined in post-match statistical breakdowns, reinforcing why clubs from abroad are tracking his progress.

Union Berlin’s interest, reported from the German side’s perspective as exploratory at this stage, reflects a broader strategy of adding younger, technically secure midfielders with resale potential. Moving for a player already established in a top-five European league, and with international experience, would fit that profile.

There has been no confirmation of formal negotiations between Lorient and Union Berlin, and no indication yet that Lorient are prepared to sanction a sale in the immediate term. With no official contract expiry date listed for Avom in the current data, Lorient appear under no immediate pressure to sell, although situations of this kind can change quickly if an attractive offer is made or if the player’s camp considers running down a deal towards free-agent status later on.

For now, the link remains in the realm of speculation, with only a 20% probability attached to the move. But the combination of Avom’s age, international pedigree, and €20.00m valuation ensures he will remain a prominent name in transfer columns. If a switch to Union Berlin were eventually to materialise, it could mark a significant step in his career trajectory, offering him a new stage in the Bundesliga and a platform to enhance his reputation across Europe.
