Arsenal interested in signing English-Ghanaian defender Jarell Quansah

Premier League giants Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Jarell Quansah after making contact with the defender’s representatives over a potential summer move.

Following a successful campaign last term that saw Arsenal lift the Premier League title for the first time in about 20 years, the Gunners has stormed the market searching for quality players to bolster their squad in their quest of making impact in the upcoming season.

The London-based outfit are understood to have opened initial discussions with Quansah’s camp in their bid to secure his signature as the club continue to strengthen the team.

Quansah, who joined Bayer Leverkusen from Liverpool last summer, has emerged as a priority target for Arsenal following an impressive spell in Germany.

The 23-year-old centre-back has continued to develop since leaving Anfield and has established himself as an important part of Leverkusen’s plans. His versatility is also believed to be attractive to Arsenal, with the defender capable of operating at centre-back while also providing cover in wider defensive positions.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen are keen to keep Quansah at the club for the coming season and are not actively looking to sanction his departure.

Quansah’s situation is notable because Liverpool previously had a €70 million buy-back clause that could have allowed them to bring the defender back to Anfield this summer. However, that option has now expired.

For Leverkusen, the priority remains retaining the defender. The club view Quansah as part of their plans for the new campaign and would therefore have little incentive to sell unless a substantial offer is presented.

The defender came through Liverpool’s academy and made his senior breakthrough at Anfield before spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Bristol Rovers. He subsequently returned to Liverpool and became increasingly involved with the first team.

His performances earned him international recognition with England before Liverpool eventually sanctioned his permanent move to Leverkusen.

Now, just one year after leaving Merseyside, Quansah could potentially be on the radar of another Premier League heavyweight.

Arsenal have made their interest known to his representatives, but Leverkusen’s desire to keep the defender means the Gunners may have to make a significant financial commitment if they want to take the next step.

For now, talks remain at an early stage, with Arsenal monitoring the situation while Leverkusen continue to insist that Quansah is part of their plans for the season ahead.
