An Arsenal supporter, Charles Ogunmilade, has been banned from attending football matches for three years after racially abusing Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on social media.
The 28-year-old made a “grossly offensive” remark about Partey following the player’s missed goal attempt during Arsenal’s match against Southampton on April 21 in the 2023-2024 Premier League season.
The incident occurred on X, formerly known as Twitter, and drew widespread condemnation. The City of London Magistrates’ Court issued the ban, emphasising that a conditional discharge “would not be appropriate” in this case.
“There was no choice” but to impose a strict penalty, the court stated.
Partey, a key figure for both Arsenal and the Ghana Black Stars, faced a challenging 2023-2024 season, plagued by injuries that hampered his contributions to Arsenal’s intense Premier League title pursuit.
Despite their efforts, Arsenal fell just two points short of champions Manchester City.
However, Partey has started the 2024-2025 campaign in impressive form, netting two goals, including a stunning long-range strike in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.
The former Atletico Madrid midfielder remains a vital asset for the Gunners and a symbol of resilience amid adversity.
Partey’s experience is not isolated, as racism in football continues to cast a shadow over the sport.
Fellow Ghana Black Stars players Joseph Paintsil and Inaki Williams have also been victims of racial abuse, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by players of African descent in the game.
