A tragic incident unfolded in Uganda when a security guard fatally shot an Arsenal fan celebrating the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The shooting occurred in Lukaya town, central Uganda, approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the capital, Kampala.
The celebration turned deadly when the restaurant’s manager, angered by the noise of jubilant fans, instructed the security guard to intervene.
Witnesses reported that after the fans ignored warnings to quiet down, the manager cut the restaurant’s power supply, which further provoked the crowd.
Moments later, the security guard allegedly opened fire, discharging several rounds into the group.
John Ssenyonga, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another fan, Lawrence Mugejera, was injured and rushed to a hospital for treatment. Both the security guard and the restaurant manager fled the scene and are currently being sought by police.
Regional police spokesman Twaha Kasirye confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the location.
“We condemn this incident and urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he said. Kasirye also called on football fans to celebrate responsibly and avoid escalating tensions during matches.
Uganda, where the English Premier League enjoys immense popularity, has seen similar incidents in the past. In October, a dispute over an Arsenal and Liverpool match ended with one fan stabbing another.
In January last year, a youth councillor was fatally stabbed in Kampala after intervening in a football-related fight, while another Arsenal fan was killed in the West Nile district following a loss to Manchester City.
Authorities continue to urge restraint among fans, emphasizing the need to enjoy the sport without resorting to violence.
