Arsenal close to finalising new Mikel Arteta contract

Arsenal are putting the finishing touches to a new deal for manager Mikel Arteta, according to the BBC.

Arteta’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027, but the club are nearing an agreement that would extend his stay in charge.

The Spanish manager has guided Arsenal to the Premier League title, ending the club’s 22-year wait for the championship. Arsenal currently share top spot in the Premier League with Manchester City, with both clubs on nine points.

Arteta has also dismissed questions about whether he could leave the club, insisting his intention is to remain at Emirates Stadium.

“The timing of the contract will not be a problem because my desire is definitely to stay here and I am very happy here,” he said.

He added: “My feeling towards the club is the same, which is why everyone is doing things in a very natural way.”

Arteta joined Arsenal as manager in December 2019 and has since established himself as a key figure in the club’s development.

Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick said an announcement on a long-term agreement was only a matter of time.

“It is just a matter of time before the signing of a long-term contract with Arteta is announced,” Garlick said.

Arteta’s existing deal is worth £10m per season, with a further £5m available if Arsenal qualify for the Champions League.

The final details of the new agreement are now being completed as Arsenal move towards securing Arteta’s future. The club’s decision follows a period in which the manager has committed himself publicly to the team, while his results have strengthened his position.
