Araujo backs Barcelona as Champions League contenders after Liverpool win

Ronald Araujo says Barcelona are among the leading contenders to win the Champions League, despite spending this season on loan at Liverpool.

The Uruguay centre-back was speaking after Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, when he was asked about his former club’s chances in Europe’s premier competition.

Araujo, who continues to follow Barcelona closely, gave an unequivocal answer when questioned by Movistar Liga de Campeones.

“Barcelona are definitely one of the favourites to win the Champions League. They are playing really well,” he said.

The defender also admitted he remains in regular contact with developments at Barcelona and is delighted by the progress being made by his former team-mates.

“I follow them. I am very happy for my former team-mates. They have a great team. I always support them and I am very grateful for what they are achieving now,” Araujo added.

His comments came after an influential display for Liverpool under manager Andoni Iraola against Atletico Madrid.

Araujo played a key part in Liverpool’s equaliser, producing a precise backheel inside the penalty area. The touch allowed Dominik Szoboszlai to deliver a cross which beat Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The performance underlined Araujo’s importance to Liverpool this season, while his remarks showed that his connection with Barcelona remains strong despite his temporary move away from the club.
