Arab Cup 2025: Morocco triumphs over Comoros in opener
Morocco overcame Comoros 3-1 in their opening match of the FIFA Arab Cup on Tuesday, securing a crucial early victory in the tournament.
The Atlas Lions displayed resilience despite facing several logistical and squad challenges ahead of kickoff.
Speaking after the game, coach Tariq Sektioui highlighted the difficulties leading up to the match.
We spent about an hour on the bus before heading to the stadium, and we only arrived a few minutes before the start of the warm-up, which prevented us from communicating sufficiently with the players before the match. Furthermore, a player who was supposed to start withdrew at the last minute. Despite this, the players showed incredible mental fortitude and managed the situation with patience and focus, he said.
Sektioui praised his squad for handling the unexpected obstacles while adapting to the challenges posed by the Coelacanths.
The Comoros also have fast players on the wings, capable of playing effectively on long balls. We managed the game well from the start and scored quickly, while the opposing team tried to come back and control the flow of the match, but we managed to secure the victory in this first encounter, and that’s important in this type of competition, the Moroccan coach added.
Morocco’s early goals set the tone, allowing them to dictate the match despite the spirited response from Comoros.
The win provides the Atlas Lions with a solid foundation as they navigate the group stage, although Sektioui emphasized the need for continued focus.
The road ahead is still long and difficult, and I thank the players for their efforts. We will therefore continue to stay focused in order to avoid mistakes in the upcoming matches, he said.
The victory marks a positive start for Morocco in the tournament, giving the team confidence as they look ahead to their next fixture against Oman on Friday.
Sektioui’s focus now turns to preparation and maintaining composure across the group stage, ensuring his side builds on the momentum gained from the opening triumph.
By overcoming initial hurdles and responding effectively to Comoros’ tactical threats, Morocco demonstrated both mental strength and tactical discipline.
The win also serves as an early reminder of the importance of adaptability and focus in tournament football, key attributes Sektioui will be seeking from his players in the matches to come.
Morocco will aim to continue this strong start as they pursue further success in the FIFA Arab Cup, balancing careful strategy with the attacking prowess that has made them a formidable force in regional competitions.
