Adil Aouchiche has described his decision to represent Algeria as “a choice of the heart”, as the midfielder reflects on his career revival at Schalke 04 and his long journey through European football.

The 23-year-old, once regarded as one of the most promising talents in French football during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, has recently rebuilt momentum after joining Schalke 04 in the winter transfer window.

The move has brought increased playing time, renewed confidence, and a key role in the club’s push towards promotion back to the Bundesliga.

After spells at Saint-Étienne, Lorient, Sunderland, Portsmouth and Aberdeen, Aouchiche says he has finally found a stable environment where he can express himself more freely on the pitch.

The midfielder believes those varied experiences, although at times difficult, have shaped his development and maturity.

“I’ve reached a point in my career where I finally feel comfortable. The project here suits me, I can play the way I like,” he confided in an interview with L’Équipe.

Despite his recent resurgence, Aouchiche admitted that earlier stages of his career were marked by frustration, particularly during his time at Lorient. He was openly critical of that period, which he described as the most challenging of his professional journey.

“It disgusted me, I felt disrespected,” he explained, referring to his limited playing opportunities at the club.

The midfielder, born in Blanc-Mesnil, insisted that he has no regrets about his decision to leave PSG in 2020, arguing that the environment at the time was not conducive to the development of young players in the way it is today.

“I wouldn’t change anything about my career,” he said, reflecting on his path through multiple clubs across Europe.

Aouchiche also spoke in detail about his international future, particularly his decision to represent Algeria after featuring for France at youth level.

He revealed that the choice had been under consideration for several years before he finally committed to the North African nation.

“During my last years with France, I was already considering it. It was a decision of the heart,” he stated.

He linked the decision closely to his family background, adding: “I think of my grandparents, uncles and aunts who are no longer with us. They would have been proud to see me wear that jersey.”

The midfielder also highlighted the personal significance of representing Algeria, saying it is a source of pride he hopes to pass on to his family.

“My son will be able to say that his father played for the national team. That’s a great source of pride.”

Aouchiche expressed disappointment at missing out on Algeria’s squad for the 2026 World Cup after being involved in a previous training camp, but said he respects the coach’s decision.

He remains hopeful of returning to the national setup and says he will support the team throughout the tournament as their “number one supporter”.
